The Lovington Fire Department is a highly motivated team with an emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and compassion.  Our department is dedicated to providing the highest quality fire protection and emergency medical services to the citizens and visitors of Lovington and Lea County, New Mexico.
 
What is the Lovington Fire Department?

Requirements 
  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid New Mexico drivers line or be eligible to obtain one.
  • Must be insurable.
  • Minimum of NM EMT-Basic upon hire date (Only required for EMS Specialist)
  • IFSAC Firefighter II preferred but not required. (OTJ training available)
  • NM EMT licensure preferred but not required. (OTJ training available)
  • Passing score of 80% on written examination.
  • Pass all portions of physical fitness evaluation and agility test.
  • Pass a background check.


Salary and Benefits 
  • Firefighter Salary: $35,000 - $42,000 DOE.
    • Certification increases for FFII, EMT-I, and EMT-P.
    • Annual performance based merit increases.
  • Leave Accruals
    • Sick leave is accrued at 12 hours per month, after 90 days of employment, and may be taken when accrued.  After 5 years and 3 months of employment, any accrual of sick leave over 720 hours is paid to the employee.
    • Annual leave is accrued at 10 hours per month for 1-5 years of employment, 15 hours per month for 6-9 years of employment, and 20 hours per month for employment over ten years.  This leave is accrued from date of employment, but there are restrictions on how much leave may be taken during the first year.  Additionally, each employee has two floating holidays per year that he or she may take at their discretion.
  • Major Medical Insurance
    • The City offers comprehensive major medical insurance to all employees and their family members, absorbing 85% of the cost.
  • Dental Insurance
    • The City offers comprehensive dental insurance to all employees, absorbing 50% of the cost.  Dependant coverage, if desired, is the responsibility of the employee.
  • Life Insurance
    • The City provides life insurance (tiered to salary) for all employees: $40,000 or $25,000, depending on salary.
  • PERA
    • The City of Lovington Fire Department participates in the New Mexico Public Employers Retirement Association Municipal Fire Plan 5 program.  In the existing plan, the City contriubtes 21% of slary to this program, whereas the employee contributes 17.7%.  An employee becomes fully vested in the City contribution after 6 years of participation and is eligible to retire after 25 years of service and receive a pension of 90% of the average top three years of salary.  For more information, visit the PERA website at www.pera.state.nm.us
